Getting Married in Leiden, Netherlands: A Dream Wedding Destination
It has become a tradition for me to visit the beautiful city of Leiden, Netherlands, every year for a wedding since 2014. This year, 2017, was no exception.
Leiden is a picturesque city with a rich history and stunning architecture, and it’s the perfect setting for a romantic wedding. One of the most iconic landmarks in the city is the De Burcht van Leiden, a medieval fortress that offers breathtaking views of the town. Nestled at the base of this hill is the charming Koetshuis restaurant, a popular venue for weddings in Leiden. The restaurant’s cozy ambiance and historical setting make it an unforgettable location for couples looking to tie the knot.
Why Get Married in Leiden?
Leiden is an increasingly popular wedding destination for couples looking for a unique and romantic location in the Netherlands. Here are some reasons why getting married in Leiden is a dream come true:
- Rich History and Charm: Leiden is one of the oldest cities in the Netherlands, offering stunning historical landmarks such as Pieterskerk, a beautiful cathedral with centuries of history. The city’s charming canals, cobbled streets, and classic Dutch architecture make it an ideal backdrop for wedding photos.
- Unique Wedding Venues: Whether you’re dreaming of a fairytale wedding in a medieval castle or a cozy celebration in a quaint restaurant, Leiden has it all. From the iconic De Burcht van Leiden, a hilltop fortress with sweeping views, to modern venues like Koetshuis, there’s a wedding venue to suit every couple’s taste and style.
- Easy Access and Beautiful Surroundings: Located just 30 minutes from Amsterdam, Leiden is easily accessible by train or car, making it a convenient choice for both local and international couples. The city is surrounded by beautiful natural landscapes, from lush parks to nearby beaches, offering plenty of opportunities for stunning wedding photos.
- A Perfect Blend of Dutch Tradition and Modern Touches: Leiden is known for its quirky Dutch traditions, like the charming orchestrion (a traditional musical instrument that plays tunes on paper rolls), which can add a touch of whimsy to your wedding celebration. At the same time, you’ll also find modern touches, with stylish wedding planners and event coordinators who can help bring your vision to life.
- Great Food and Drink: Dutch cuisine offers many delicious wedding catering options, from elegant multi-course meals to fun, casual snacks. You can incorporate local flavors, such as Dutch cheese, stroopwafels, and traditional drinks like Dutch gin (jenever), ensuring your guests will enjoy a memorable culinary experience.
Erin and Hidde’s Fairytale Wedding in Leiden
This time, I had the privilege of photographing the wedding of Erin and Hidde, a young American-Dutch couple who met by chance in Las Vegas and instantly fell in love. Hidde, originally from Leiden, wanted to bring his love story back home to the Netherlands. Despite living in the United States, Erin and Hidde worked hard to plan their wedding from afar, and although it wasn’t without its challenges, the result was absolutely worth it.
The big day was nothing short of magical. The weather was perfect, except for a brief rain shower, which we Czechs believe is a good omen for the newlyweds. After all, a little rain on your wedding day is said to bring good luck and happiness.
The ceremony took place in the Pieterskerk, an ancient cathedral that exudes timeless beauty and elegance. After the vows were exchanged, the couple was serenaded by an old-fashioned orchestrion, a traditional Dutch instrument that’s a crowd favorite. The music echoed through the streets as guests followed the joyful tune to the reception, turning the moment into a lively, musical parade. The orchestrion, a magical box on wheels, played a song by Beyoncé using holes in a sheet of paper—such a unique and fun experience!
Erin and Hidde’s wedding day was the perfect blend of Dutch humor and American warmth. The speeches were heartwarming, the atmosphere lighthearted, and the love shared by everyone was palpable. It was truly a fairytale wedding that showcased the beauty of Leiden as a wedding destination.
